The hits keep on coming and we keep the conversation rolling with Tampa craft brew aficionado & nature-lover Smooth Jay. In this segment we throw caution into the wind and go to the dark side of the moon. Dark, delicious and decadent this trio is not for the faint of heart: Angry’s Chair’s ‘Fudge Bucket‘, Bottle Logic’s ‘Jam the Radar’ & Hubbard’s Cave’s ‘Chocolate & Cinnamon Pot De Creme.’ Enjoy!
Local Tampa Craft Beer Connoisseur/Conversant, Nation-Wide Beer Trader & All-Around Kick-Ass Dude, Smooth Jay was gracious enough to join us for a mini bottle share and put that raspy voice of his to work to talk some beer. In this segment, we go “lighter” with ‘Man Child’ – a PB&J Berliner from Hidden Springs and a couple of different Imperial IPAs: ‘Daily Phone Call’ – a hazy New England style from Highland Park/Green Cheek & ‘Naked Villany’ – a Triple IPA from Calusa Brewing.
We don’t apologize for our love of craft beer. And although we don’t talk about music, we both love late 80s/90s hip hop & rap. Well, this genius in St. Pete named Kevin Shaw decided to put the two together and built ‘If I Brewed the World.’ They’re still pretty young in the game but are making a name for themselves in Pinellas with intense flavors like ‘Crunchberry Cereal’ (yes, like what you ate when you were a kid) and a very coffee forward Dry Irish Stout called ‘Dark Pool.’
We’ve paid our respects and caught back up with Dissent Craft Brewing Co-Founder & Head Brewer Chris Price. Now it’s time to drink the beers including 2 gold medal winners in the Best Florida Beer Championships – Frequency Imperial IPA and Hazy Mangover Chili Beer. If you’re in Pinellas and haven’t made the trip to Dissent you’re really missing out on some good beer.
We’re back in the outskirts of Pinellas Park just north of Downtown St Pete, the breeding grounds of some of the best beer in Pinellas County. And we’re here to talk to Mr. Data Analytics / Brew Recipe Engineer himself, Chris Price. The facility has grown, tattoos are now present, the beers have ascended to new heights and the medals have even started to come in. It’s high times ahead at Dissent Craft Brewing.
What do you get when you mix dark coffee beers with girl scout cookies? Yeah, you get a seriously buzzed sugar high prior to crashing and probably don’t do your waistline any favors, but besides that.. you get to go back to your childhood. Only this time you get to ruin your dinner completely unconcerned about when your father gets home. Small victories.
In a Balls and Brew exclusive, we get the very first public tasting for Mastry’s Brewing Co. 2019 Tampa Bay Beer Week bottle release. ‘Yes, You Can Dance’ Barrel Aged (Tequila) Imperial Gose & ‘Cruder Methods’ Table Beer w/ Brett collaboration with 2nd Shift Brewing (St Louis, Mo). Both were awesome!! Grab one fast if you see it!
Overshadowed by the popularity of downtown, St Pete Beach is often forgotten in the local beer world of Pinellas County. If you haven’t been to Mastry’s Brewing Co. then you’re truly missing out on an incredible experience. In our return to catch up with Founder/CEO Matt Dahm (and intro to head brewer Micheil McElvey), we were quickly reminded what a valuable asset this place is to the city and what an incredibly quality product they’re producing.
Tucked away just outside of downtown St. Petersburg is a hidden gem with some very good beer – Flying Boat Brewing Co. In this segment, head brewer Tyler Singletary takes us on a journey. We submerge ourselves into the city’s past, drink it’s beer in the present on our way to guiding you to pay this brewery a visit in your future. May all of their good beers that we have consumed in our history be repeated.
If we don’t respect our history, then we’re certainly doomed to repeat it. Fortunately for us, we have a history of interviewing kick ass people who share our passion for beer and Flying Boat Brewing Co’s Tyler Singletary is no exception. Time to open up your history book and learn a thing or two about St Pete over a cold one. We suggest a Batch 100 or Denmen’s Landing Russian Imperial Stout, but that’s just us.
